I am not sure if he is the bruiser or the bruisee, but either way, I have a Red-bellied Woodpecker hanging around the yard again. It seems to me that the sky always looks bluer (when it’s not gray, cloudy, snowing) in winter. To see other skies, check out Skywatch.

I pulled up to the stop sign at the end of Beech Road heading to work after the Thursday Morning birdwalk. I glanced both ways and then up. Way above me a hawk soared, making lazy circles in the sky. It was pretty high but as it turned and twisted in the air, the tail flashed red. Migration is in full swing here, but this beautiful Red-tailed Hawk obviously had no intention of hitting the highway er, flyway just yet.
For other skies, noodle around out at Skywatch.
I was with friends the other day and we were talking about if you were a bird which one would you be. There were lots of interesting answers from hawks (of course) to a vulture (you can’t be serious!) to eagles (hmmm, yes but have you heard their call?), and an Anna’s Hummingbird (biggest of the small). Me? I want to be a scissor-tailed flycatcher. I love that tail and their soft demure beauty, but buddy, you had better watch out when they fly. The underside of those wings are the most amazing shade of salmon pink.
What bird would you be?
